Wednesday:Burke Centre’s Landings Community Center (9:45-11:10am) — Slow Flow Vinyasa class open to the public. Experience is recommended but we take it slow enough for you to catch on. This is an active class, it is work, it is strength and focus -building and it will teach you about yourself.

Here I am in Virabadrasana 3 — Warrior 3 on frozen Lake Erie… February 2016 (I don’t teach on a frozen lake, by the way…)

Monday: All-levels Yin Yoga (7:45-9:15pm weekly):

Yin (the opposite of “yang” or active) yoga is a slower form of yoga, and the focus is more about lengthening and releasing muscles and fascia than it is about “skill” or “poise.” That said, you will get stronger and your focus will improve because the poses are held longer, so you can feel them, and truly release into them.

As always, breath with motion is emphasized to bring the greatest benefit. The last class of each session (email me at mjtfield@verizon.net for details because you will need to bring blankets and /or a bolster — just send me a note, we’ll figure it out) is always a restorative* class where all poses are supported and held for seven minutes each. The time flies in a restorative class, trust me.

Yin classes are held Monday evenings 7:45-9:15, starting January 11 at the Landings Community Centre. 6001 Cove Landing Rd., Burke VA — it is tucked just slightly off Burke Centre Parkway.

      • You don’t have to be a Yoga Journal devotee to participate in this class; modifications will be offered.
      • Buy a “session” (for fees click here or see below) for $12 class, or
      • You may drop in to any of these public classes for $15/each
        • Checks made payable to “BCC”
      • Bring your own mat (and blanket if desired), I provide straps and blocks.
      • I also spritz the room with lavender to help you release during savasana, (final relaxation pose).
      • Each session will end with a restorative practice (so 6 a year now, instead of 4!)
      • I follow the FCPS calendar regarding breaks and holidays
      • Inclement weather: the property is owned by a private conservancy and parking lots are tended as their resources allow. Generally, parking is not an issue, but if it is, I will advise all registered students of any changes, so providing your phone number is very important for me to apprise you of any issues.

Wednesday:  Slow Flow Vinyasa yoga (9:30-11am weekly):

Slow Flow Vinyasa (SFV) asks that you stay present and let your body breathe. You will learn to NOT be the boss of your body, but rather let your body lead you to success.  This format inspires a much stronger sense of presence and mindfulness while at the same time, asking your muscles to slow down and heat up in a way that traditional Hatha yoga doesn’t. It will be more active, more “aerobic” lending a sense of length and accomplishment almost right away. This class requires you be familiar with traditional yoga poses. Bring your own mat. Blocks and straps provided.

We practice sun salutes and other balance, strength traditional work, including inversions (per your comfort level), in an encouraging way and positive space. You go at your own pace, fast or slow, I’m just there to lead the class, guide you or give you ideas! The last class of each session (email me at mjtfield@verizon.net for details because you will need to bring blankets and /or a bolster — just send me a note, we’ll figure it out) is always a restorative* class where all poses are supported and held for seven minutes each. The time flies in a restorative class, trust me.

SFV classes are Wednesday mornings, 9:45-11:10 am at the Landings Community Centre. 6001 Cove Landing Rd., Burke VA — it is tucked just slightly off Burke Centre Parkway.

      • Experience is helpful but not required: it tends to be just slightly more athletic, as I gear it for the day ahead.
      • Buy a “session” (for fees click here or see below) for $12 class, or
      • You may drop in to any of these public classes for $15/each
        • Checks made payable to “BCC”
      • Bring your own mat (and blanket if desired), I provide straps and blocks.

I teach at Breathe:

Yoga For Every BODY: Monday late afternoons 4:45-5:45 weekly.

If you’re new to yoga or you love a basic refresher class, or just want some quiet, this is for you. This class will help you understand the whys of what we teach and the hows to get there yourself. You will learn about seated poses, twists, equal distribution of support weight / balance  in all poses, how to notice it, awareness of it and why it matters. There’s still a savasana at the end.

restoYin: Friday nights 6:30-7:30pm weekly.

All relaxation, all the time. This slow, meditative, restful class will release the muscles, tendons and ligaments in supported poses that you sink into for 5-7 minutes each. The mind might wander….that’s ok, let it….just don’t follow it. The option of coming back to your breath and sinking into the pose is always waiting for you. What’s even better? There’s still a savasana at the end. If you have a bolster, please bring it.

Power Vinyasa: Saturday mornings 9:00-9:50am weekly.

This fast-paced flowing class will work your shoulders, glutes, ankles, wrists and everything in between. Conscious deep and cleansing breaths coupled with lunge flows and core twist pulses, back bends, and more will ensure your body warms up as you experience your heart rate reach the 130s in this 50-minute routine. Don’t worry, there’s always a savasana at the end.
